Mary Dawn

Alexander Knight

On a secret beach by a perilous sea
Swims the beautiful maiden, Mary Dawn;
Whose splashes and kicks turn to silvery mist
That swirls to her beautiful song.

The words that she sings, when they echo and ring
Have more influence than power or brawn
To lay down the fears, and dry all the tears
Of the souls who can hear, Mary Dawn.

And the silvery swirls that dance and whirl
Line the clouds that come flying along.
They’re eager to listen and won’t even whisper
When Mary is singing her beautiful song.

But it’s her looks that attract all the vows and the pacts
From her numerous guards—good and strong.
They’ve sworn in the length of their lives, and their strength
To protect, fight, and kill for their queen, Mary Dawn.

They’re under no spell, they just live for that swell
In their hearts, that they get from her song.
They’d all rather die than leave from her side
For to them she’s their bride that they’ll serve for life-long.

She’s surrounded by reefs, silver clouds, and her knights,
Yet despite all these helps she’s alone.
They keep her from pain, the clouds hold their cold rain,
And the reefs keep the waves from pounding too strong.

But, it’s the struggle that saves her, the guards have depraved her,
So she tells all her guards to “be gone”.
But they all will not leave; to their queen they all cleave,
For their armor and shields are engraved, “Mary Dawn”.

Each one is hoping she’ll choose her a king;
To rule her—their small, helpless swan.
So she keeps on pretending her heart isn’t rending,
To this day she keeps singing and playing along.

So, if you find a coast that is calmer than most,
With silver clouds that seem ancient and headstrong,
Just make no false move, or her guards you will prove—
Turn your ears to the shore, and behold,
Mary Dawn.
